Our brains don't like change because it needs more energy to create new connections and pathways than it does with using old ones. Armed with this information, Mel Robbins created a plan to thwart the sabotage of our brain and learn to tame it in order to achieve the changes we desire...
- The woman of letters -
Melanie Robbins, is an American born Schneeberger, on October 6, 1968. She is a personal development coach, commentator, television host, motivational author and speaker.
She studied history and film at Dartmouth University from 1986 to 1990. Then graduated with a law degree from Boston University College Law School in 1994.
Prior to working for CNN, Mel Robbins worked as a criminal defence lawyer.
Following the publication of this book, Robbins was invited to speak at a TEDx conference in San Francisco, where her talk titled "How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over" created a buzz and propelled her career.
- The content -
« Stop Saying You’re Fine » draws on neuroscientific research, interviews, and ideas that Robbins tested on her own, so she could prove what works and what doesn't.
The key lies in understanding that our brain is our nemesis. Knowing that we are our own worst enemy when it comes to change, that no one will come to save us and that our dreams depend on us: this book gives us a new perspective on our problems.
So from small actions to small actions, by appropriating small moments rich in possibilities, we are making big changes (no matter the field).
Mel Robbins divides the people who cannot change into two categories: those who are afraid of what can happen (the chickens) and those who prefer to blame others for everything (the jerks), making it clear that we all have a little of both in us. She gives advice on how to break the cycle of negative judgment in our mind and how to act when the opportunity arises.
In addition to discovering the science behind our connection with others, we learn how to get things done and why 'five seconds' is the maximum amount of time to act on an idea, before our brains distract us from it or that it evaporates.
- My observations -
This book may not be for everyone. However, if we are wondering why we are failing at taking risks or why we are failing to make a decision... It can help us.
In a straightforward, fun, and accessible way, this book offers concrete and helpful advice on how to stop putting obstacles in our way. The insights help us move into a better life, ensuring that the next time someone asks us how we are doing, we can honestly answer: « Great! ».
The only downside to this book is that we are relying solely on her words, for the lack of sources.
Conclusions
Mel Robbins teaches us to be powerful, even when we don't feel like it. Because we are supposed to do more in this life which offers more tools, more information and more contacts to achieve our goals.
So if we feel tired and / or are dissatisfied with our life, we are not alone. This how-to guide tells us why we secretly feel frustrated and bored with our lives and reveals what we can do about it, step by step.
