Without minimizing the feelings we get when we lose our job, let's remember that it doesn't end our career and let's focus on the positives...
- A time to reload -
Unemployment is not the end of the world. It is true that after being fired, staying positive is easier said than done. There are good days and bad days and we know that finding a new job is a laborious task, which is why we need to take the time to do activities that keeps us going and happy.
Working on our resume and passing job interviews will take a lot of our time, but it's important to recharge our batteries. This will allow us to reconnect with ourselves, but also to see what we are expecting from our future job, employer and colleagues, to prepare questions on the culture of the company and to focus on aspects that are important to us.
- A time to travel -
Let's make sure we set a budget and stick to it, because when we are no longer receiving a salary, it is safer to know how we are going to save and spend our money.
But even if funds are limited, we can find a way to travel within our budget. Whether we are leaving the country or going camping in the town next door, there are always projects that we have been unable to achieve due to the work.
- A time to reconvert -
Perhaps we will find that the professional field we have chosen did not suit us or doesn’t suit us any longer. In this case, losing our job gives us a chance to change our career path, to think about what really interests us. Let’s look at all of our options and let’s step out of our comfort zone.
- A time to go back to school -
For some of us, school seemed futile or we didn't have the opportunity to complete the studies we wanted. By strengthening our professional gaps, either by going back to school, by following training courses or by learning on our own, we will be able to open more doors. This choice is exciting and frightening at the same time, and it is up to us to decide whether continuing our studies is a beneficial exercise or not.
- A time with our loved ones -
We can spend the next few days sleeping and slouching on the couch all day eating veggies, chips, chocolate, or we can get up in the morning, get ready for the day and spend time with loved ones, hell even do both.
In most situations, they are the support that will get us through this time. We can even ask them to send the message that we are looking for a job.
However, if our family circle is rather condescending, let's avoid their unsolicited contact and advices, which could undermine our morale and our motivation to move forward in the right direction (rather than jumping on the first possibility).
- A time to find a better job -
By losing our job, we have the chance to see what other companies are offering, whether it is better hours, better benefits, a more friendly and/or more professional work environment. We need to look for a company that provides everything we lacked in our previous job.
For those of us who really liked the previous company, we must keep in mind that a new business will be different, but that's not a bad thing. Let's stay open to new experiences.
Conclusions
Getting fired is not an ideal situation but by emphasizing the positive sides, we will be able to see things in a different light. This is not the end of the world.
We have new professional opportunities more suited to our needs/expectations, meeting new people or perhaps changing paths.
