Just as recruiters can reject a candidate, it is completely normal and acceptable to reject an employer. Here's how to do it...
- Do not close completely -
Showing up for a job interview doesn’t mean that we will accept it. We’re not misleading anyone unless we said anything in the hiring process such as : « I will definitely take this job if you offer it to me ».
The recruiters reacting badly to rejection, are also those who would have reacted badly to our holiday requests, payment of our bonuses or our overtime demands. In short, this is proof that we have avoided the dysfunctions of this recruiter, who does not respect professional standards, nor his/her workers.
- Promptly notify the employer -
Our decision made, let's not delay in contacting the recruiter to inform him/her (This in order to avoid turning a disappointment into a frustration). Not to mention, that they probably have other candidates waiting, who would be happy to receive the offer once we’ve decline it.
- Justify our choice -
This may seem unfair since recruiters are constantly rejecting candidates without giving a reason, but let's be better and keep good relationships going for the future.
It is not necessary to provide a detailed report. Let's go for something simple, like:
« Thank you very much for considering me for this position, but after more reflection, I have decided to decline your offer and focus on another role closer to my professional expectations. »
« I’ve given a lot of thought to the move this role requires, but decided that now isn’t the right time. »
« Prior to our discussion, I didn’t realize the extent of the sales aspect of this role, as I seek a role more focused on administrative work. »
It is possible that our reason prompts the company to try to find a way to address our objections, or it may not react at all.
Conclusions
Whether it is a proactive approach or an offer made to us, we will have to make the decision to accept or decline the positions offered to us. However, whatever the context, refusing a job offer is not easy, we will have to identify the good reasons to do so.
